Walk through any tourist market in Thailand today and you’ll see the younger generation of these vintage embroidery designs.
Today’s tapestries are sharp and polished. The ones in the photos were purchased at a rough-and-tumble second-hand market, leftovers from the original incarnations of this tourist schwag. They’re actually Burmese designs but have found a thriving trade in much-more-visited Thailand.
These older embroideries flaunt a more rustic look in contrast to the almost mechanical attention to detail in the modern tapestries. You can still see the hand of the artisans here.
