Vintage Indian Baby Photo
Look at the peepers on this little girl. Sure, she’s naturally beautiful, but the kohl around the eyes really helps them pop.
Indian mothers have traditionally applied kohl to their babies’ eyes – for a variety of reasons. It’s said to be healthy for the eyes, protects them from sun, helps them grow up with big beautiful eyes in the future, etc.
Called kajal in Hindi-speaking areas and kan mai in Tamil Nadu, where this photo was taken, kohl is starting to fall out of favour, not least of all because many preparations still contain lead.
