I’m infatuated with Thai music from the 1960s and 1970s. Some of it’s pure homegrown. Some of it is East-meets-West. Cover songs – in English or in Thai translation… or totally original Thai lyrics atop a Western tune. Familiar retro rhythms and styles merge with Thai instruments. There’s a strong current of funk influence in a lot of these vintage Thais songs. Borrowed from American GIs?
The song below is actually a rescued-from-the-vaults recording of a teenage American expat doing her band’s groovy interpretation of a hit Thai country song. Just listen and let it carry you away.
“In the year 1961, Village Headman Lee banged the drum to call a meeting…”
I could go on and on about all the reasons why I love this song, particularly this recording, but I’ll let you make up your own mind.
